March 30th is Doctor's Day

This yellow rose is so beautiful.  This was taken by one of the Art's Camera's Focus Group who attended the "Flowers Up Close" class at Waukesha Floral earlier this month.  Spectacular!

Do you know a very special doctor?  March 30th is Doctor's Day!  Send your favorite doctor flowers or plants to let them know how special they are.

Hippity, Hoppity, Easter's on Its Way!

As seen in the flower shop this week, Easter's almost here!  I spied a couple of arrangements that would be delightful on a spring table!  The topiary features a light-up Easter egg tree with pastels, daisies and those great green mossy carnations.  The low arrangement has hot pink Gerbera daisies, tulips, stock, and purple kale, with swoops of pink bendable sticks and seeded eucalyptus.

Hop in this week!

It's Really Spring!

Spring Vase by Fringe
Organic Easter Basket

Spring is upon us!  Even if the weather doesn't always cooperate, we know that the longer days will lead to continued warmth and gradually, to brighter days!

We wanted to show you one of our new vases... by a company called "Fringe".  These vases are decorated with different botanical scenes on each side... yet when viewed through they create a beautiful 3-D like image of nature.  They make a treasured gift!

And don't forget our Easter baskets made with wheat grass seed.  A few fresh flowers or colored eggs makes a simple fresh arrangement.  Cut the grass and you'll think of summer after the grass is mowed.

An Epidemic of Spring Fever

Today is the last winter day before spring arrives!  Has it been a long winter for you?  January cold, February snow and an active March mix of weather has certainly taken its toll on those who suffer from spring fever.  The only remedy we can recommend is a stroll through our greenhouses.  Even on cloudy days, it's a warm place to be!

This past weekend, Art's Cameras Plus came on a field trip to Waukesha Floral with their Flowers Up Close class and club members.  Here are some of the pretty flower pictures we received from these talented photographers.  It's refreshing to see all the details in the flowers that we sometimes take for granted.

We invite you to take a stroll... bring your camera... and share your pictures with us any time.  Wage war against that spring fever!

Festival of Flowers 2013

Kris Lombardi gets everything ready for guests
March 13th was the 4th annual Festival of Flowers held in Waukesha Floral's greenhouse to raise funds for the Interfaith Senior Programs.

After days of stark, gray and overcast skies, this day was sunny and bright, which filled the greenhouse with warmth and the hope of spring!  A delicious box lunch from Rochester Deli was served amidst spring flowers and the steady chatter of old and new friends.  Our own Denise Gehrke, AIFD and Marty Loppnow provided a design show incorporating the color theme of the year... Emerald green.  10% of  the day's proceeds went directly to Interfaith Senior Programs.  While the two seatings of luncheons proceeded, several of our employees were planting seedlings for spring gardens.

We had a nice time and if you attended, we hope you did too.  Thanks for helping us in this great fundraising effort for folks who give back so much to our community through all their volunteerism and hard work!

A Wee Bit O' Green

A very cool terrarium made by Marty is currently residing in our greenhouse.  This teardrop shaped glass is suspended by a thick rope hanger and filled with ivy, mosses, rocks, bark and other interesting bits.  It's a micro garden under glass!  We also have lots of other glassware and terrarium plants and succulents available.

Fairy Gardening

Have you heard of fairy gardens?  The first time I heard about these miniature gardens was 15 years ago.  I was on a trip and a lady from Ohio asked if this type of gardening was popular in Wisconsin.  I had not heard of it, but she sent me information about outdoor fairy gardening... make miniature gardens to attract those seldom-seen little sprites!

15 years have passed, and it seems like indoor fairy gardens are enjoying lots of popularity these days.  Miniature tropical plants are used as the basis and the gardens are kept inside in our cool weather.  Small accessories are added, like the wheelbarrows, miniature fences and Adirondack furniture.  These are perfect for a small space and require little care, except for keeping the plants in their best miniature form.  What you put in the fairy garden is limited only by your imagination!

Guess what?  The fairies have visited Waukesha Floral's greenhouse and planted a few gardens here!  If you're looking for a fun little hobby or an unusual gift, consider the fairy garden.  We recommend them for anyone age 6-106!

Not Just for Grandma

African Violet plants are thought of as rather old fashioned, but they can be the perfect start for the novice interior gardener.  The newer varieties tend to have bolder, brighter colors and a wide variety of petal types, from straight to ruffled, single to double or semi-double and even fringed.  Plants range in size from about 6" across to more than 16", perfect for a small space like a windowsill or desktop.  They like a bright location and the more humidity the better! Here is an African violet that is cozy-ing up to a fern and miniature palm plant.  It's planted in a glass dish with rocks and potting soil mix that will need to be water weekly.  Like a terrarium, the closed shape of the glass container should help to conserve some of the water and provide more humidity for the plants.

Dr. Seuss Day is Today!

Pincushion Protea
Guess what?  Today is Dr. Seuss Day!  Theodor Seuss Geisel was born this day in 1904 and penned so many great books that inspired the love of reading in children and adults.  It's also National Read Across America Day, so make sure you pick up a favorite book and read for enjoyment!  In honor of Dr. Seuss, we present to you a flower that would be at home in any of his books... the pincushion protea is a tropical bloom that is a stand-out in any arrangement or beautiful in a shallow dish of submerged river rocks... as the star of the show!  It's both long-lasting and fascinating!

Birdcage Buds!

Oh Spring!  When will you be upon us?  If you're getting married in Spring, time may be flying by for you!  Here's an example of a lush spring arrangement created for a Spring wedding in an elevated, stylized birdcage.  Flowers include gorgeous open peach roses, stargazer lilies, ivy and green kale.  The table is finished with honeycomb candle holders, etched  "blade of grass" candles, rose petals and lichen orbs.  This was designed by Denise.

Planning your wedding at Bristlecone Pines this year?  Then you'll see some of our designs this weekend at your Saturday tasting event.  Give us a call and we'll be happy to discuss your wedding flowers any time!
